| Barrow's Haunt is a role-playing game which takes it's geographical structure from the present-time location of Cumbria, United Kingdom, and it's essence from the skeletal framework of the World of Darkness fictional setting. Realism is at the basis of this game, yet the realism of this setting differs starkly from that of the real world. Wraiths, vampires, and other supernatural phenomena are the core source of intrigue for the player characters, allowing them to explore varying perspectives and exercise their imagination, problem-solving and reasoning skill through the tools and points of view of their characters. The fictional dangers that await them range from benign intrigue to inhuman horrors and ghastly occurrences. It is a horror game, but one in which the players play a fraction of that horror.
The main characters are exclusively vampires, scions of ancient bloodlines and members of varied allegiances, be it to themselves, their clans, or their sect. Players may also have a degree of autonomy over the ghouls and mortal contacts within the influence of their player vampire. To offer an optional aid in creating a motivation for these vampires to venture the dangers of Barrow, several story hooks will be provided in further postings. Barrow is, after all, much unlike the bustling cities where immortal societies have staked their demesne. The town does not support a full Camarilla court or Sabbat colony. In their absence, other evils have thrived and flourished—to a degree that is unnatural even amidst this World of Darkness. This is an untamed land, and a concentrated balefire of buried secrets and shadowy occultism. Cainites may find that the treachery of their brethren is altogether safer compared to the uncontrolled mysteries of this land without masters. For the monster who can topple all others, however, Barrow could be a surprising seat of power in the years to come. Â
